After reading numerous blog posts and several videos on the topic, I believe that the following three videos provide the best overview and necessary insight into how Ceph works, what it offers, how to mange a cluster, and how it differs from Gluster.<\/p>\n<p>This video was given at the 2013 linux.conf.au conference. The first one is a Ceph only talk given by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hastexo.com\/who\/florian\" target=\"_blank\">Florian Haas<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/au.linkedin.com\/in\/tserong\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Serong<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0It provides a complete overview of the Ceph software, it&#8217;s feature set and goes into detail about the current status of each of Ceph&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0components (block storage, object storage, filesystem storage, etc).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"[Linux.conf.au 2013] - Ceph object storage, block storage, file system, replication...\" width=\"625\" height=\"469\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IrKyw6Hu8tU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The second video is a bit more\u00c2\u00a0lighthearted, it is a talk which involves some back and forth between Ceph&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/ceph.com\/community\/people-profile\/sage-weil\/\" target=\"_blank\">Saige Weil<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and Gluster&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/johnmarkwalker\" target=\"_blank\">John Mark Walker<\/a>, the talk is moderated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hastexo.com\/who\/florian\" target=\"_blank\">Florian Haas<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0It covers some of the basic use cases for each file systems, offers some technical insight into the overall design, some of the ways in which the filesystems are\u00c2\u00a0similar, some items that are on each of their roadmaps moving forward, \u00c2\u00a0as well as some of the ways each of \u00c2\u00a0the projects differ from one another.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"[Linux.conf.au 2013] - grand distributed storage debate glusterfs and ceph going head head\" width=\"625\" height=\"469\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JfRqpdgoiRQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The final video also takes place at the\u00c2\u00a02013 linux.conf.au conference. \u00c2\u00a0It covers some of the same topics that were discussed in the prior two videos, however this one is also geared toward the operations aspect of managing a Ceph cluster. \u00c2\u00a0This talk is given by <a href=\"http:\/\/ceph.com\/community\/people-profile\/sage-weil\/\" target=\"_blank\">Saige Weil<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"[Linux.conf.au 2013] - Ceph: Managing A Distributed Storage System At Scale\" width=\"625\" height=\"469\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/90nvIlBqwXg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently started looking into Ceph as a possible replacement for our 2 node Glustr cluster.
